Isha Jain Wins $100,000 Scholarship

Isha Jain, a 16-year old from Bethlehem, PA, won a $100,000 scholarship as the individual winner in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology at New York University Monday.

Her project, ''Bone Growth in Zebrafish Fins Occurs via Multiple Pulses of Cell Proliferation,'' adds a new dimension to the understanding of human bone growth and the ability to treat bone injuries and disorders, judges said.

Jain, a senior at Freedom High, identified a cellular mechanism underlying bone growth spurts, and her work was published in the journal Developmental Dynamics.

At age 9, Jain created a paradigm to explain the molecular structure of candy. To this day, her research has been taught in classes across the nation.

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally.

"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was taken after the attack.

Bhutto's assassination presents an opportunity for Musharraf. "It's very possible Musharraf will declare [another] state of emergency and postpone the elections," Rubin continues. "That will confirm in many people's minds the idea that the military is behind" the assassination. For it's part, the U.S. will likely "be scrambling to say the election either needs to be held as planned or postponed rather than canceled, but Musharraf is in a position to preempt that."

The victim said Kelly offered her a ride home after a party at a friend's house. Kelly was arrested by Darien police and charged with three counts of first-degree sex assault and two counts of first-degree kidnapping. On Jan. 19, 1995 _ Kelly surrenders to authorities in Zurich, Switzerland. On May 3, 1995 _ Kelly is returned to the United States. On May 5, 1995 _ Kelly appears in Stamford Superior Court where a $1 million bond is set; he is released after his parents post bond. On Sept. 23, 1996 _ Kelly is charged with fleeing the scene of a Darien car crash and leaving his injured girlfriend in the road. On Oct. 1, 1996 _ Jury selection in the trial for the Feb. 10 rape begins in Stamford. On Oct. 15, 1996 _ Trial begins. On Nov. 5, 1996 _ The jury begins deliberations. On Nov. 12, 1996 _ A mistrial is declared when the jury splits 4-2 for conviction. On April 9, 1997 _ Jury selection begins in the second trial for Feb. 10 rape. On May 15, 1997 _ Second trial begins. On June 12, 1997 _ Jury convicts Kelly of rape. On July 24, 1997 _ Kelly sentenced to 16 years in prison. Joe Kennedy dies

Joe Kennedy, major-league(mlb) pitcher, died early Friday morning, a Hillsborough County sheriff's official said. He was 28.

Kennedy passed out at home and was brought to a hospital, said Hillsborough County sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter, who had no further details.

Kennedy's agent, Damon Lapa, told ESPN.com that Kennedy died while at home with family in Florida. Lapa did not return phone calls and an e-mail from the Associated Press.

"We were terribly shocked," said Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey. "From what we understand, he was in Bradenton ... to be the best man at a wedding today."

Godfrey said he didn't have any particulars on the cause of death.

"Obviously, when a 28-year-old man dies, ballplayer or not, it's a terrible, terrible thing," he said.

The left-hander played seven big-league seasons with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays. Kennedy compiled a 43-61 record with a 4.79 ERA, pitching 908 2/3 innings in 222 career appearances.

Kennedy made his big-league debut in June 2001 and made his last appearance in relief on Sept. 29 in a 5-3 win over Tampa Bay.

If you’re reading this from a computer somewhere inside the US, you’re likely either already stuffed with Turkey or drooling in anticipation.

If you’re outside the US, you’re probably wondering why half the blogs you read have gone to sleep–it’s the effects of the Turkey! ;-)

Seeing as I am originally from India–it’s taken some time to get used to the idea of celebrating an event which basically marks the freedom from the British. However, I’ve now fully embraced the holiday–after all how can a Marketing Pilgrim not give a hat-tip to the original Pilgrims?

So enjoy your Turkey Day, and for those outside the US, know that things will pick-up again on Monday–yes, it’s a two-day affair!

SHE might have just starred in one of the biggest fashion shows in the world but don't call Gunnedah girl Miranda Kerr a top model.

"I'm not a supermodel, I'm just a country girl who ended up on the catwalk,'' Kerr told fashion editor Jen Melocco from behind-the-scenes yesterday.

However that's not the impression the rest of the world had when she strutted down the Victoria's Secret catwalk before an A-list audience in Los Angeles.

The runway extravaganza, which featured the annual lingerie parade and a performance by the Spice Girls, is considered one of the top gigs for models in the world.

The lust-have ticket of the year for fans of the US lingerie giant and retail chain, which inspires much of its $US10billion in sales each year.

The parade spectacular is also a top rater, taking Kerr prime time in the US next month.

The sexy show is also broadcast simultaneously on giant TV screens in Times Square, New York, where Kerr is based.

"What they've told me they like is that I like to have a good time and have fun and don't take all this too seriously,'' she said.

"I like to interact with the audience and give a little more,'' she said.

"I'm a people person and I like to give a little wave to everyone in the audience,'' she said.

While some women would be nervous legging it in public in their knickers, the 24-year-old is confident in her role.

Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith dies

Former Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith, who fought hard against guerrilla forces of Robert Mugabe and other liberation fighters in the 1960s and 1970s, has died in a South African convalescent home after a long illness, APA learnt here Wednesday.

Smith, aged 88, died Tuesday in Cape Town although the exact cause of his death was not known. He had reportedly suffered a stroke earlier this year, according to reports.

The rebellious colonial ruler had moved to Cape Town in 2005 where he stayed with his stepdaughter Jean, a widow herself.

Smith served as prime minister of the British self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia from April 1964 to November 1965 and as the first premier of Rhodesia from November 1965 to June 1979 after unilaterally declaring independence (UDI) from the United Kingdom on 11 November 1965.

Under the UDI, the country failed to gain international recognition and United Nations economic sanctions were instituted on the territory.

Dennis Quaid's Newborns Given Accidental Overdose

What should have been a blessed time for actor Dennis Quaid and his wife, Kimberly Buffington, turned into a time of anguish and anxiety, after their newborn twins nearly died from an accidental overdose of a blood-thinning drug.

Zoe Grace and Thomas Boone received a massive overdose of the blood-thinning drug Heparin — used to keep IV catheters from clotting — some time after their Nov. 12 birth at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

While not mentioning the Quaids specifically by name, the hospital released a statement that confirmed that three of its patients had received 1,000 times the prescribed Heparin. Instead of 10 units per millimeter, the patients received 10,000 units.

"This was a preventable error, involving a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures," the hospital said. "Although it appears at this point that there was no harm to any patient, we take this situation very seriously."

But not every patient is lucky enough to survive such an overdose. Last year, a similar medical mistake killed three premature babies at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, including Dawn Jeffries and Demaya Nelson.

"You just don't make a mistake on nobody's kid. They're supposed to be professionals. That's not professional," said Demaya's father, Dejuan Nelson, after the deaths.

In that case, the nurses grabbed vials of Heparin for adults instead of Hep-lock for children. The two medications are nearly identical and the pharmacy technician mistakenly stocked the cabinet with the wrong vials.

"Ultimately the blame for our errors falls upon the institution. This is a system failure," Methodist Hospital CEO Sam Odle said at the time.

Medical errors can be a weakness in any hospital. Each year 1.5 million patients suffer from mistakes with the medicine they're given, according to the Institute of Medicine.

"It's relatively easy to think that you're giving one when you're actually giving the other," said Dr. David Bates, professor of medicine at Harvard University Medical School.

Some hospitals are attempting to limit such mistakes and dangers. They have begun using bar code systems to match patients with the proper drugs and prevent incidents like the ones at Methodist Hospital and Cedars-Sinai
