
Alex Kelly the former Darien High School wrestling star, then an 18-year-old raped a 16-year-old Darien neighbor in the back of a Jeep Wagoneer on a snowy night. The victim said Kelly offered her a ride home after a party at a friend's house. Kelly was arrested by Darien police and charged with three counts of first-degree sex assault and two counts of first-degree kidnapping. On Jan. 19, 1995 _ Kelly surrenders to authorities in Zurich, Switzerland. On May 3, 1995 _ Kelly is returned to the United States. On May 5, 1995 _ Kelly appears in Stamford Superior Court where a $1 million bond is set; he is released after his parents post bond. On Sept. 23, 1996 _ Kelly is charged with fleeing the scene of a Darien car crash and leaving his injured girlfriend in the road. On Oct. 1, 1996 _ Jury selection in the trial for the Feb. 10 rape begins in Stamford. On Oct. 15, 1996 _ Trial begins. On Nov. 5, 1996 _ The jury begins deliberations. On Nov. 12, 1996 _ A mistrial is declared when the jury splits 4-2 for conviction. On April 9, 1997 _ Jury selection begins in the second trial for Feb. 10 rape. On May 15, 1997 _ Second trial begins. On June 12, 1997 _ Jury convicts Kelly of rape. On July 24, 1997 _ Kelly sentenced to 16 years in prison. On Dec. 23, 1998 _ Kelly pleads no contest in Feb. 14 rape case; no additional prison time imposed. Charges related to June 1996 bar incident and September 1996 car accident are dropped as part of the plea bargain. On Nov. 23, 2007 _ Kelly released from prison.
